People in Lanzarote record their future on video

  • In a small territory whose economy is completely dependent on tourism, this initiative seeks to encourage the greatest possible number of people to think about what they want post-COVID19.
  • Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote, an internationally renowned film festival, is compiling one-minute videos in which people who live in the island respond to the following question: “What should Lanzarote be like from now on?”
  • To date, we have received around one hundred videos that reflect a broad diversity of views about the island’s future from self-employed and freelance workers, pensioners, owners of small businesses, artists, hotel managers, environmentalists and political representatives. Videos can be submitted up until 31 May. All the videos will then be screened on 15 June.
  • Lanzarote is facing the biggest economic crisis in its history as a result of the current global travel ban. The birthplace of the artist César Manrique, a world pioneer in interrelating nature, culture and sustainable tourism, the island has always tried to find the perfect balance between economic and environmental development. A path that can be, at times, hard and full of tensions. For this reason, Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote understands that the situation caused by the coronavirus is also a unique opportunity to rethink the island’s future.

In the words of the festival’s director, Javier Fuentes Feo, “in times of crisis it is vital that the debate is not monopolized by the most radical voices, and for this reason it is crucial to know the greatest number of different viewpoints possible. That is why we decided to put the audiovisual language at the service of the island’s community. The goal of this project is to create a shared horizon based on the ideas and reflections of all who wish to take part.”

The idea is for the people who live in the island to think about the question: “What should Lanzarote be like from now on?” for a day or two and to then record a video with their thoughts. The video should have a maximum duration of one minute and can be sent by WhatsApp to the following number: +34632343550, or by email to:

The project wishes to fulfil several goals. Firstly, it is a source of ideas for thinking about and rebuilding the island’s future. Secondly, it is a sociological tool for consulting islanders about their preferences. Finally, it will become an historical audiovisual archive that will give future generations an idea of what Lanzarote was like during the fateful year of COVID-19.

With ten years’ experience to its credit, Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote is a cultural project in which the relationship between the local and the global has been crucial in each of its annual editions. Analysing various emblematic features of the island, such as the Volcano or Salt, it has managed, through the medium of film, to connect the island’s ways of life with other communities around the planet. Each year’s edition of the festival includes conferences, meetings, walks to iconic places in Lanzarote and screenings of films from the five continents.
