Trasfoco: The Salt Section

Como as Serras Crescem

Salt extraction in traditional salt-flats is by nature a slow and unhurried job. Here, human labour is wedded to perfection with elements of nature: the earth that retains the filtered water, the right amount of air that is needed to help the slow process of evaporation, the salt water that contains the precious mineral and, finally, the heat of the sun that enables the slow process of crystallization. However, in these salt-flats there is more than just the work of human beings combined with different elements of nature. Here there is also great biodiversity: hundreds of animal species grow in this unique environment, where surprising forms of life are found among the incomparable beauty of changing colours.
