Trasfoco: The Volcano Section

Stromboli

Shortly after World War II, a refined young woman is trapped in an internment camp in Italy. Oppressed by her confinement, she strives to get her hands on a visa that will allow her to cross the Atlantic. In the face of the refusal of the authorities, she decides to marry the good-looking Italian officer who visits her every night. After they are married, the couple travels to Stromboli, the little volcanic island the soldier comes from. The clash between the haughty woman and her great ambitions, and the profound local traditions anchored in religion and in popular obscurantism, produces an unbearable atmosphere.
