With its current status still unrecognized as a sovereign nation by the People’s Republic of China and several other countries, Taiwan occupies a precarious position as one of the contested islands on the extreme chessboard of global geopolitics. Throughout history, it has often found itself at the eye of the storm of warfare. In the 1940s, a Taiwanese entrepreneurial family experiences a series of traumatic events as they are caught in the relentless tide of the era’s intense political upheavals. Japanese forces on one side, mainland Chinese on the other, nationalists, guerrilla groups—each exerts its pressure. Amid this tragic turmoil, the family clings to a simple hope: the dream of a life worth living.
