Martín García Island is the only land border shared by Argentina and Uruguay. Situated in Río de la Plata, it used to be an important military stronghold and a place that saw the deaths of countless men over centuries of conflict. Its strategic position in the river’s main channel made it the subject of battles between Spain and Portugal, as well as English, French, unitarian and federal forces. Now a nature reserve and tourist destination, today this small island is the setting for an introspective teenager arriving with his mother, who tries to eke out a living running the local cantina. The island’s tragic and violent history intertwines with the young man’s journey as he begins to grapple with the mysteries and complexities of life.
