Images of student protests in Franco’s time and in the early days of democracy in Spain still linger in the collective memory. People running along university corridors, chased by cops, mounted police, and arrests.
Those who lived through those events and those who have seen them in archive images know that the protests played a key role in the resistance against the dictatorial regime. But resistance also has its consequences. On 12 December 1977, Javier Fernández Quesada, a Biology student at the La Laguna University died after being shot by the Guardia Civil during a demonstration.
