Viet and Nam

Viet and Nam are two young lovers who work deep underground, extracting large quantities of coal each day before returning to the surface. Their living conditions are harsh, but their love—filled with both eroticism and tenderness—makes their world feel a little brighter. Scarred by a painful war with the United States, their country is rapidly transforming, fuelled by the capital sent by emigrants, into a place where consumption is the ultimate marker of success and prestige. Yet, the traces of war linger in the memories of those who lost husbands, sons, uncles or brothers, as if, despite the nation’s gaze fixed on the future, the ghosts of the past can never truly be erased.
