A Night of Knowing Nothing

Official Section

Inside a cupboard in Room S18 of a hostel in the Film and Television Institute of India, a box was found with love letters and other assorted items like newspapers cuttings, dried flowers and memory cards. The letters were written by a young woman, expressing her desperation on being rejected by her boyfriend. His family, from a higher caste, had pressured him to break up the relationship. Love is broken by the age-old Hindu social hierarchy of castes, even as universities in India are the site of social movements and protests that seek to revert those social structures. And so, love finds itself at the very centre of student protests, while the country as a whole struggles with forms of repression that try to maintain the status quo.
