Trasfoco: The Volcano Section

Ascent

Located in the centre of the island of Honshu, Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest peak. For centuries, it has been worshiped and depicted by poets and painters like Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), who created an impressive and extremely beautiful suite of thirty-six engravings in colour of the sacred mountain. For the Japanese, Mount Fuji is a place of sacred pilgrimage, and in recent decades it has also become a massive tourist attraction. This whole rich and complex collective imaginary marks, through thousands of photographs, the beginning of a biographical climb towards love, nostalgia, affection, tradition and memory.
