Trasfoco: The Volcano Section
Cochihza
The Omeyatecigua volcano, later renamed Inmaculada Concepción by Franciscan friars, is located on a small island in Lake Cocibolca in Nicaragua. It is a perfect volcanic cone with a completely symmetrical and balanced shape. Communities of farmers and fishermen live and work in the villages of Moyogalpa and Altagracia, not far from its slopes. Time passes slowly in this island. The volcano, with its history of recent relatively mild eruptions, coexists with these communities, whose silent memories contain the traces of revolution and counter-revolution, of years of violence not easily erased from memory.
