Heimat is a Space in Time
By recovering letters, documents and reports, Thomas Heise takes a look back at the first half of the twentieth century: a period in which social and economic uncertainty, class conflicts, major political tensions and the obsession with ideas like “homeland” and “race” led to two wars that spilled the blood of countless millions of people. In this catastrophe, in which Germany played a key role, Jewish people or those who had married them bore the brunt. But the worst disaster is that those massacres have not disappeared from our contemporary societies. Like a virus that had remained latent, many of the same ideas and social structures still linger on today waiting for a new time to sprout anew.
