Las cruces
Maguas Section
The military coup that took place in Chile on 11 September 1973 had dramatic consequences for the whole country. The then president of the democratically elected government, Salvador Allende, was assassinated at the doors to the presidential palace in Santiago. Repression and torture soon became widespread. Among the many people who disappeared were 19 workers from a paper company who were arrested for their involvement in the trade union movement and left-wing parties. Silence and impunity held sway for decades until, forty years later, a policeman broke the pact of silence and revealed the implication of CMPC, the private paper-making company, in the men’s deaths. However, the case still remains unresolved.
