The Answer

Trasfoco: And Life Goes On Section

On 22 May 1960 an earthquake measuring 9.6 on the Richter scale hit the city of Valdivia in Chile. The earthquake triggered numerous landslides that blocked up the outflow of Riñihue lake. Large unstable sinkholes of mud filled with water every day, threatening to flood the whole city. If the natural dams had broken, Valdivia would have been washed away in a matter of minutes. A team of hundreds of men worked tirelessly day and night to open channels that would drain the water in a controlled manner. The city remained on alert, attentive to the dangerous task and the perseverance of the arduous workers.
