Open Call
Call for submissions from July 20 to September 1, 2020
Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote is a project organized by Asociación de Cine Tenique, a non-profit organization whose main goals are to promote, diffuse and debate independent films, analyze the local context and connect it to global level.
The current health situation generated by COVID-19 requires us to think deeply about the role and importance that cultural events have for local communities and their inhabitants. From Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote we consider that their development is essential, due to their ability to put people in contact, as well as to generate sociability through the processes of debate and knowledge. For this reason, our intention is to do everything possible to avoid falling into the exclusive virtualization of life and to be able to celebrate part of the activities phisically, always respecting all the sanitary requirements provided in every moment.
The 10th edition of the project is scheduled to be held in late November 2020.
Conditions for participation
The 10th Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote is divided into two sections open to public call:
– Official Section of Feature-length Films
– Cruce de caminos: Filmmakers from the Canaries Section
All entries shall be produced after 1 January 2019 and shall not have been distributed commercially in film theatres or in home-cinema supports (Blu-ray, DVD or Internet) in Spain.
In the event that the health situation generated by COVID-19 makes screening in theaters impossible, the organization may present the films on an online viewing platform.
Entering a film for the festival implies full acceptance of these rules and conditions.
The competition is open to fiction and non-fiction feature-length films from any country or nationality.
For the purposes of this competition, a feature-length film is any film with a duration of 40 minutes or more.
There shall be one single prize for Best Film in the Official Section, whose winner shall receive 2.000 euros, and the prize shall not be declared void. The prize money shall be subject to tax deductions legally in force at the time of payment, and said deductions are included within the prize money.
Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote shall conserve a copy of the prize-winning film for its archives, and may exhibit it twice within its annual programme with a not-for-profit cultural purpose.
The organisation of Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote shall appoint a jury with a minimum of three members and a maximum of five members, whose decision is final. Members of the jury shall not have any interests in the production, distribution or any form of exploitation of the films selected for the competition.
The Director and/or a representative of the Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote may be present during the deliberations of the jury — which may take place in person or telematically — having the right to speak but not to vote.
The prize-winning film shall include the image that Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote will provide in the opening credits of each copy of the film exhibited following the conclusion of the festival, both in copies for commercial film theatres as well as copies for home-cinema supports (Blu-ray, DVD or Internet), as well as in any kind of material used to promote the film.
The prize money shall be paid following the signing of an agreement between the organisation of the festival and the producers of the prize-winning film, which specifies the fulfilment of these conditions.
During Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote, the organisation may exhibit the selected films on a maximum of two occasions, with the exception of the prize-winning film, which may be exhibited on three occasions. For this purpose, the producers shall cede the rights for the public exhibition of the films for the duration of the festival, without any cost.
The section Cruce de caminos: Filmmakers from the Canaries is open to short films produced and/or filmed in the Canary Islands or directed by filmmakers born or resident in the Canary Islands. This condition must be accredited with official documentation.
For the purposes of this competition, a short film is any film with a duration of 30 minutes or less.
The section will be competitive, endowed with a prize of 500 euros.
Films may be entered for the festival between July 20, 2020 and September 1, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. (GMT+01:00, Canary Islands time).
The producers or distributors of the films shall entry them on the form available on Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote webpage (https://www.muestradecinedelanzarote.com/). The festival does not charge a fee to register of enter films.
Films shall not be accepted for evaluation in physical formats (DVD, Blu-ray, USB…).
All the films shall be presented in their original language. In the event that the original version is in a language other than Spanish, it must be sent with subtitles in Spanish or in English.
Sending copies for exhibition
The deadline for sending copies for exhibition of selected films is October 30, 2020.
For questions of environmental sustainability, Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote encourages copies for exhibition to be sent online.
The formats accepted by Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote are DCP and hi-res digital file. In addition, as a back-up copy, the festival also requires a digital file in H.264 format.
The films chosen for the festival must send a copy for screening with subtitles in Spanish, in the event that the original language of the film is not Spanish, or in English, and the list of dialogues in Spanish or English.
Promotional Materials for the catalogue
Apart from the copy for exhibition, the producers of the selected films must send and agree the use of the following material before October 1, 2020:

Presenting films for the festival implies full acceptance of these conditions. These conditions shall be applied and interpreted by the organization of Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote.
Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote reserves the right to cancel partially or totally its activities unilaterally in the event that the health situation or any other fact of force majeure prevents its proper development.
Any doubts arising from the interpretation of these conditions shall be resolved by the organization of the festival.
