Canarian cinema and films made in the archipelago have experienced remarkable growth over the past two decades. Numerous associations, collectives and companies have emerged and flourished during this time. Many of them have been instrumental in driving the Canarian audiovisual sector forward, encouraging political representatives to expand resources for its development and consolidation.
At the same time, some industry professionals and agents have raised concerns that political efforts have occasionally focused more on attracting foreign productions to the Canary Islands—enticed by tax incentives—than on nurturing a strong, local creative sector capable of exporting the region’s talent to other parts of the world. This delicate balance has been significantly influenced by organisations such as Microclima, which have advocated for greater local development.
Amid these collective, associative, and business-driven efforts, film festivals have stood out as some of the most consistent and enthusiastic supporters of the islands’ creative sector. Events such as El Festivalito de La Palma and the various initiatives launched by the Las Palmas International Film Festival since its early editions have been instrumental in fostering the growth, professionalisation, and visibility of Canarian cinema. These festivals have not only showcased films but, more importantly, invited the filmmakers themselv to share their experiences, ideas and perspectives. This socialising role has created networks of collaboration, partnerships, and even friendships, forming a resilient cultural fabric.
From its inception, Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote has committed itself to this same mission, striving to contribute to the reinforcement of the island’s creative and cultural sector. Each year, the festival invites directors to spend several days on the island and works to increase the prize for this section with every edition. These small but growing gestures are aimed at highlighting the significance and value of Canarian cinema, ensuring it continues to thrive and gain recognition.
